Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about intro edits, supported workflows and using CratePrep.

What is a DJ intro edit?
An intro edit is a version of a track with an instrumental run-up on the front — usually 8, 16 or 32 bars — so you have something to mix into before the record proper starts. Most edits sold in DJ packs are exactly this. It is what lets you bring a track in on the phrase instead of dropping it cold.
How do you make an intro edit?
By hand it means finding the first downbeat, separating the instrumental from the vocal, repeating a section to fill the length you want, and aligning the join so the drop lands on the one. That is a DAW job. In CratePrep you click where you want the track to start after the intro and it builds all of that for you.
Do I need a DAW to make intro edits?
Not any more. Making your own used to mean Ableton, Logic or Pro Tools, stem separation, and a good hour per track once you had learned how. CratePrep does that job in a few clicks in your browser.
What is a vocal lead-in?
The vocal pick-up that arrives just before the track drops — the line or ad-lib that tells the floor what is coming. CratePrep overlays it on the tail of the instrumental run-up, so the transition flows rather than switching abruptly from intro to record.
Why don't record pools have intro versions of older songs?
Pools edit what is current. Intro and clean versions get made for new releases while they are being pushed, and the back catalogue mostly never gets the treatment. That is why the older records in your crate are the ones with no intro version anywhere — and why making your own is the only way to get one.
How many bars should a DJ intro be?
16 bars is the usual answer and a safe default — long enough to beatmatch and ride the blend, short enough that the floor does not lose interest. 8 bars suits a quick cut in a busy set, 32 suits a long blend or an opener. CratePrep does all three so you can try the same track at each.
Which DJ software does it work with?
Choose an audio file from your device. The browser editor works one track at a time and does not need a DJ library connection.
Can I make intro edits for a whole crate at once?
The browser editor works one track at a time. It includes intro, outro and Acapella options.
Is my music uploaded anywhere?
Audio processing depends on the editor you use. Check the privacy page for details about the current website build and how your audio is handled.
What does it cost?
You can try the editor for free. See the pricing page for the current free allowance and Pro details.
